Robotics Team Hosting Info Sessions for Younger Students

Farmington High School team will provide details on starting robotics programs for kids K-8.

Over the next several days, the Farmington High School FIRST® Robotics Team will be holding three information sessions for anyone wishing to start FIRST® Lego League (FLL) or Junior FIRST® Lego League (Jr. FLL) teams in their town. These programs are all sponsored by FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit organization founded by Segway® inventor Dean Kamen to inspire students in grades four to twelve to develop a passion for science and technology.

The FLL program introduces students from grades 4 – 8 to real-world engineering challenges by building and programming LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.

Focused on building a science-based interest in a younger audience, Jr. FLL is a hands-on program for grades K – 3 designed to capture children's inherent curiosity and direct it towards improving the world around them. Just like FLL, this program features a real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches and the Jr. FLL Core Values, students work with LEGO elements and moving parts to build ideas and concepts and present them for review.

The sessions will be presented by students on the FHS Robotics team, as well as adult coaches. They will provide more details regarding the two programs and information on how to register a team. The sessions are geared towards parents, teachers, school administrators, and the general public.

Each session will run from 7 – 8 p.m. The presentation schedule will be as follows:

Tuesday, 5/22 – Farmington High School (Library) – 10 Montieth Dr. Farmington, CT 06032

Wednesday, 5/23 – University of Hartford (Gengress Student Center) – 200 Bloomfield Ave. Hartford, CT 06117

Thursday, 5/24 – Russel Library – 123 Broad St. Middletown, CT 06457

The FHS Robotics Team is proud to count among its sponsors UTC Otis Elevator Corporation, ebm-papst Inc., UTC Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, Parker Hannifin Fluid Control Division, Farmington Public Schools, and Fabtron Precision Fabrications.
