West District Shows Off Largest Number of Tumbling Tigers

Annual gymnastics show featured a huge number of students.

West District's 5th annual gymnastics show was by far the biggest yet, Physical Education teacher Joel Ziff announced, opening the show at the school's March assembly. Previously, the school has had between 50 and 60 students participate in the show, a schoolwide celebration and culmination of the gymnastics unit. Students spend their gym classes choreographing their routines on a series of mats and balance beams that wind their way through the gym. They work mostly in teams. But this year, Ziff widened the show to include first-graders, who were coached by upperclassmen. Fourth-graders spent their recess time indoors with the first-graders, helping them build and rehearse their routines.  That gave the show a total of 227 performers this year, with 102 teams.  "There are a total of 2,500 individual moves..." Ziff said. "They worked very hard at being self-directed. The students are very excited to share with you."
