West Woods Students Compete in American Mathematics Competition

Student volunteers joined in and scored well on national mathematics test.

This year, for the first time, a group of students from West Woods School took part in the American Mathematics Competition Grade 8 (AMC 8). The idea came about at the suggestion of a parent of a grade-five student, since some other schools in the area already take part. The student participants included volunteers from sixth-grade math classes. This year, the AMC 8 included participation from over 2,400 schools and 150,000 students in grades up to and including grade 8. The test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in a 40-minute time period.

Students from West Woods that scored in the top 25 percent of all student contestants included Dylan Suffredini and Kumar Darsh. Nicholas Roman also scored in the top 25 percent and was the third-place finisher at West Woods. Joining Dylan, Kumar, and Nicholas and taking second place was Sagnik Banerjee. Finally, scoring in the top 5 percent of students was Isaac Choi, West Woods’ first school winner.

This special plaque will be hung in West Woods School to commemorate the first, second and third place winners of this year’s contest, as well as contests in years to come.
