Meals on Wheels Celebration with Nickerson & Esty

Nancy Nickerson, Farmington’s Town Council Chair and Mayor, set off with Nancy Walker, Executive Director of Services for the Elderly of Farmington, and Elizabeth Esty, Farmington’s Representative to the United States Congress, to deliver nutritious, balanced meals to Services for the Elderly’s clients on March 17, 2014.  Mrs. Nickerson was one of thousands of mayors participating in Mayors for Meals, a component of March for Meals, a national campaign held during the month of March to support the work that ends senior hunger.

“Nancy Walker and I were excited about having Congresswoman Esty participate in our Mayors for Meals day,” said Mrs. Nickerson.  “Services for seniors are an important aspect of the quality of life that makes Farmington a wonderful place to live.”

Year-round, more than 90 volunteers help their friends and neighbors through the Farmington Services for the Elderly’s Meals on Wheels program, bringing nutritious, balanced meals and a friendly hello to home-bound clients.  Services for the Elderly’s volunteers deliver more than 6,500 meals each year.

“Our volunteers deliver more than food. They are kind and dedicated,” said Mrs. Walker.  “It’s been a long winter and they haven’t let snow or extreme cold stop them from reaching our seniors.”

After completing her Meals on Wheels route, Congresswoman Esty stayed for the St. Patrick’s day-themed Congregate Lunch at Farmington’s Senior Center. This Congregate lunch is offered at 12 noon on Mondays and Fridays at the Senior Center. Reservations are required; the cost for the meal is $2.75. Transportation can be arranged if needed, and all are welcome.
