5th Farmington Rotary 5K Road Race Slated for Sept. 30

One Mile Fun Walk/Run added to annual race.

Submitted by The Rotary Club of Farmington

It’s that time of year again when the air is beginning to cool and the runners set their marks. And as it has for the previous four years, The Rotary Club of Farmington will again host its annual 5K Road Race. Except this year, there will also be a one-mile “Fun Walk/Run” just before the 5K version. As usual, the event is scheduled to coincide with the annual Unionville Festival on Sunday, Sept. 30.

“We’ve noticed in the past that a lot of kids and older walkers or less avid runners want to participate, but they’re not up to competing in the 5K road race. So this year, we decided to give them their own event, a one mile walk/run that’s just for fun,” said Thomas Cook, co-chair of the event along with Doug Kartsen. The Fun Walk/Run was the brainchild of Cook and Irene Engel, another member of the Road Race Committee.

The new Fun Walk/Run will begin at noon at the Unionville School, 123 School St., Unionville. Registration for this shorter race will be at 11 a.m. at the gazebo in front of the school on the day of the walk/run. The registration fee is $10.

Registration for the 5K race can be accomplished in advance viawww.rotaryroadrace.org or on the day of the race beginning at 11 a.m., also at the gazebo. Advance registration is $20, while registration at the event will be $25. The first 200 to be registered will also receive race T-shirts so pre-registration is recommended.  The 5K race will begin at 1 p.m. The 5K race will be electronically timed and each runner’s time and place will be recorded.

Farmington Bank will once again serve as the Elite Sponsor of this event.  Other donors this year include Silver Sponsors, Dunning Sand & Gravel, Otis/UTC, Trumpf, and the University of Connecticut Health Center; Bronze Sponsors, May, Bonee & Walsh and Ballard Associates; and our Runner Sponsors, Apricot’s Restaurant and Pub, Carole King of Keller Williams Realty, and Autofast, Inc. Funds raised from this event will be used to support the local and international projects of the Rotary Club of Farmington.
