D.K. Saves The Day

Senior Legion Baseball Unionville Post 32 on 2012-14-06

Thursday, June 14 Unionville got back on track with an exciting 5 to 4 win over Simsbury at Memorial Park. Down by two in the top of the seventh with one out and two runners on base, Unionville had a slim chance for victory.  David Kerlezja or D.K. as his coaches and teammates call him, came to the plate.  His bat had been uncharacteristically cool all night but Unionville fans in the stands had a feeling this at bat would be different.  D.K. did not disappoint as he blasted a three run homer to put Unionville on top 5 to 4.  Unable to push across an insurance run, Unionville entered the bottom of the seventh with Kerlezja on the mound as the closer and the task of preserving the lead.  Again D.K. did not disappoint. He faced four batters; struck out the first, gave up a base hit to the second, and he threw out the last two batters who each hit dribblers to the mound.

Starting pitcher Johnny Arcidiacono pitched six strong innings facing 27 batters, giving up only four hits, striking out three and walking five.

Arcidiacono was an offensive standout as well going 4 for 4 at the plate with a double, three singles and a run scored.

On Friday, June 15, Unionville travels to Fuessenich Park in Torrington. First pitch is 7 p.m.
