Farmington Boys Varsity Lacrosse Off to 2-0 Start

Indians showing early season poise, determination.

By Robert “Bruce” Donald

On April 7, the Indians dismantled the Berlin Redcoats who held up well as a new varsity program, with particularly good play from their goalie Andrew Alessi. The 11-5 CCC league game was never in doubt as Farmington controlled the play.

The contest highlighted early season poise on defense from Farmington with solid play from Junior Tri-Captain Thomas Stevens in the middle and the usual heroics from four-year veteran goalie, Senior Tri-Captain Henry Donaldson. There were plenty of shots on goal amidst some early sloppiness on offense.

A bright spot was the renewed spirit at midfield. Last year’s midfield play was uninspired and this year’s bunch is clearly intent on making up for some inexperience with scrappy play and good riding for a solid defense in transition. Stats: Danny Marsh 4; (A, Sr.) James Donald (A, Jr.) 3; A.J. Georger 2; Brian Dunn (M, Sr.) 1; (A, Jr.); James Steele (M, Jr.) 1.

On April 9, East Catholic arrived from Manchester wearing sky blue on a cool spring day. What became an 11-5 non-league romp was initially in doubt as the Eagles owned the end of the first period and all of the second period coming back from Farmington’s 2 early goals for a 3-2 score at halftime and leaving the Indians scratching their heads.

However Farmington showed spirit, gritted their teeth, and took over in the second half, never looking back. The subsequent game featured noticeably better set plays on offensive with good ball movement.

Senior attackman and Tri-Captain Danny Marsh was unstoppable, putting the game away in the last half with five goals on crisp feeds from his cohorts. Defense was solid with goalie Henry Donaldson only letting in two in the second half and the midfield firmed up, controlling the ball in the center. Stats: Goals: Danny Marsh (A, Sr.) 5; James Donald (A, Jr.) 4; A.J. Georger (A, Jr.) 2. Saves: Henry Donaldson (G, Sr.) 16.

The Indians play tonight at South Windsor and at Valley Regional on Monday. Farmington’s next home game is on Tuesday, April 17 against powerhouse Avon, 4 p.m.
