Rowers in Farmington High School's girls first boat proved themselves the fastest in the state May 16, also becoming the only Farmington first boat to win a state championship in the history of the public school regatta, said head crew coach Laura Butterfield.

"We have been second many times, but never gold at the first boat level," Butterfield said. "We have had other boats win gold medals, but never first boat."

The team as a whole also won its first point trophy at the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association Championship.

"The rest of the team earned enough points in their placement to win the team point trophy, which our school recognizes at the state championship for the entire team," Butterfield said.

Farmington typically competes with prep schools during the season, but the championship regatta was established in 2000 as a way for public school teams to compete against one another, Butterfield said.

Butterfield said it was "awesome to see the girls be so successful this year" and thanked parents, alumni and the community for supporting the crew program.
