Faith in Culture

St. James Parish warmly invites interested people to attend its year-long program, Faith in Culture.  This informative series will be offered on Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in St. James Parish Hall at 3 Mountain Road, Farmington Center. Please join us for an evening, a series, or for the whole year of exploration.

  • The first of six four-week offerings, Violence and Culture, will begin on September 22. Rector George Roberts and Director of Christian Formation Emily Perow will lead a discussion on the challenges of violence in media.
  • On September 29, The Reverend Tracy Johnson–Russell, an Episcopal priest and founder of Your Place in New Haven, will discuss her work with at-risk teens in the context of life and ministry.
  • The Reverend Kathy Adams–Shepard, Rector of Trinity, Newtown, will speak on October 6 about her parish’s response to the shootings last December at Sandy Hook Elementary, and their work teaching children how to build a culture without violence.
  • On October 20, a panel discussion on the challenge of violence in their own milieu will feature The Right Reverend Jim Curry, Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut; Dr. Michael Pines, child psychologist; Farmington Chief of Police, Paul Melanson; and Mia Flynn, a Farmington High School student.

The second series, beginning on Sunday, November 3, will focus on Women, Faith and Culture. The remaining offerings will be: Science and Culture; Finding Our Spiritual Center in such a busy and divided world; Ethics in the Public and Private Square; and World Religions, what divides us and what brings us together. More information on speakers will be provided prior to each program.

Transportation can be arranged for those who do not drive in the evening.
