Math Night at Union School

Union School students came back to school at 6:30 at night on Thursday, March 20 to have some fun with math.  Union School's Math Specialist Mike  Buccetti enlisted the help of students in his weekly early morning Math Challenge Club and kindergarten teacher Susan Persa to present a variety of math games and activities.  These games and activities incorporated a range of math thinking, such as counting for the younger students, to probability, logical thinking, and problem solving for older students.  The main requirement was that every game or activity had to be fun.

At one station, students made paper airplanes and tested their designs.  The student whose plane flew farthest – and it was more than 28 feet! - won a prize.  Other games ranged from Compare (which is similar to War) for younger students to Fraction Capture for fourth graders.  One of the favorite locations during the night was in the library, where parents and students used iPads to play with math apps.

"I am really proud of our students- and our parents.  They made the night a great success,” said Mr. Buccetti.  “I am especially proud of my math challenge club students who independently ran most of the games and activities."

Throughout the event, students had opportunities to earn raffle tickets.  At the end of the night, four students received prizes.   Students from kindergarten through fourth grade eagerly met the challenges of Math Night, and asked Mr. Buccetti to do it again soon!
