Two Walks for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Supported by Union School Friends & Family
Union School fourth grader Alexa Bonini and her family and friends rallied around her when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) this spring, and many joined her team for the Hartford Area JDRF Walk for a Cure on Sunday, September 29, 2014 at Rentschler Field. Alexa’s parents Tracy and JP, their son Gavin, Alexa’s aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and their families were a 30-person strong team on a glorious day. They raised a substantial $5,000 altogether to go toward diabetes research.
“It was amazing to be at our first walk and see so many people out there to support such a wonderful cause!” said Tracy Bonini. “And then to top off a wonderful day, our team T-shirts won first place in the Family T-shirt contest!”
Prior to the walk, Alexa’s friends and fellow Union School fourth graders Kaitlyn Coleman and Ella Szczepanski made and sold rainbow loom bracelets and set up a lemonade stand to raise money for the walk, in which they participated.

Also prior to the walk, Union School hosted The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) on Friday, September 20, at a morning assembly. The JDRF program showed students how to raise important research dollars, and also taught them about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, healthy eating, and exercise.
Union School is inviting students to fund raise for a JDRF Kids Walk that takes place on Wednesday, October 9, at Union school. 10% of what's earned goes back to the school, but Union School has decided to pass on this and give everything to JDRF instead. All schools/groups are invited to form a team and participate. Please visit http://www2.jdrf.org/site/PageServer?pagename=kidswalk_schools_benefits to learn more.

JDRF is the leading global organization funding (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D.
