Friends Hold Fundraiser for Former Fire Chief

400 come together to help cover Billy Knight's medical costs

Friends and family of former Tunxis Hose Fire Chief Billy Knight organized a fundraiser, held Saturday night at the Unionville Knights of Columbus, to help cover mounting medical costs of his treatment for pancreatic cancer.

News of the event spread around town by word of mouth and Facebook posts. By night’s end, over 400 people had attended.

“The family was absolutely overwhelmed by the response,” said Jeff Hawkes, a close friend of Knight’s. “It was just incredible. People just kept coming and coming. We filled the parking lots, ran a shuttle and double-parked cars on New Britain Ave. We saw people we hadn’t seen in 30 years. Everyone in Unionville came out to help.”

Knight was a member of the Unionville Muster team and four other New England teams came by bus.

In addition to ticket sales, a raffle was held. Over 60 local merchants donated raffle items.
