Porter’s and Avon Old Farms to Hold Relay for Life Walk

Last year's event raised $76,000 for American Cancer Society.

On May 5 and 6, Miss Porter’s School and Avon Old Farms School will hold their fourth annual Relay for Life, an all-night walk to benefit the American Cancer Society.  Students and faculty from Porter’s and Avon Old Farms School will participate in the event, walking in honor of people living with cancer or in memory of those who have lost the battle with the disease. The walk will be held at Miss Porter's School.

The Miss Porter’s School/Avon Old Farms School Relay for Life raised more than $76,000 through the 2011 walk.  Led by Porter’s senior Jen Park, teams from Porter’s and Avon have been actively fundraising for the 2012 event.  Fundraising will be ongoing until the walk, and will include the sale of luminaries for use during the Luminaria Ceremony.  To join a team or to donate, please visit http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY12NE?pg=entry&fr_id=42127.

The walk will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 with a Survivors’ Lap, a celebration of those who have triumphed over cancer, and will continue throughout the night, with at least one member of each team walking at all times.  A Luminaria Ceremony will take place after dark.  During the ceremony, luminaries bearing the name of a person touched by cancer are lit and placed along the track, where they provide a reminder of the importance of defeating cancer.  While team members are not walking the track, they will be able to enjoy other activities including karaoke, live music performances, and movies.  The event will conclude at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 6.  Approximately 300 people are expected to take part in this year’s event.
