With big box book stores crowding the market, independent stores are a dying breed. But Jan Owens has managed to maintain a quirky, smart, little store in Farmington center for nearly 40 years.

Millrace Books, tucked into a plaza on the Farmington River is a thriving home to brilliant new books, eager young readers, an art gallery, the Farmington River Literary Arts Center, a flock of Chinese geese and one grey cat named Pearl.

Patrons can find original art work, unique cards, classics and new releases here. The Farmington Literary Arts Center, piloted by Owens and a board of directors, hosts lectures and workshops with local authors and experts. There are also programs for the very young. Owens says nurturing a lifelong love of reading is a priority.

The bookstore has brought nationally known authors to Farmington, helped launch local authors and kept the history of Farmington alive. Both Owens and Pearl are friendly and eager to engage all readers in this vital literary community.
