The Gap was first opened in 1969 in San Fransisco. Donald and Doris Fisher noticed that the youth were wearing jeans as a statement of the time. The Gap was short for Generation Gap. Donald was also unable to find his size of Levy's in a department store. Put those two together and their idea was born. Originally, just Levi Strauss jeans were sold. Today, The Gap carries a full line of clothing for men, women and children. Its latest trend is the Black Jean line.
