You need to be careful about the interaction between dog and toad/frog....The skin secretions on theRead More toad can be toxic. We have to watch our dogs carefully during toad season out here in Tolland. Our dogs seem to get high when they succeed in licking the toad. Then they drool excessively and can have loose stools. Anyone have any further info on this?

Last month (April) the Mama bear and her cubs came down our driveway on Colton St.. We carefullyRead More watched from our window as they lumbered through our yard stopping briefly at our bird feeder. They have been here before, and we think they are a beautiful part of nature. I was so sad to hear that someone shot one of the cubs. This is their home, we are the invaders. We must be midful of where we live and that wildlife is abundant in Farmington, especially near wooded areas. We must learn to co-habitate and respect nature. After all, we are all part of the same earth. We may not want to feed them, but we can certainly enjoy their majesty when we see them. Thanks Peggy for posting this wonderful letter.

Very sad for the Bears. I believe that reporting the sightings of bears to DEEP gives them theRead More numbers they need when the state tries to allow bear hunting. I will never report a bear sighting to DEEP. Bears are making a comeback after people killed them off in our state a number of years ago. We need to live with them. I wasn't there so I can't comment on what happened with Mr Lynch and the bear. Heartbreaking...

It saddens me to hear about the fate of the bear cub, but there is a reason why the DEEP keepsRead More reminding people to not leave food out for the bears. While it's wonderful that you have the bears coming into your yard, but what is going to happen when they start to get aggressive because there is not enough food left out for them. I'm sure one backyard is the same as another to them, but sooner or later, someone is going to get hurt because these bears are HUNGRY.

Thank you Lauren. I figured the temptation would be too much for certain punks to ignore. I hopeRead More they are caught if they attempt it again. Punishment should be a summer of painting the lines on the road with a 1-inch paintbrush.

The problem is: 1. Even though you do everything possible most peopele do not. I have walked out myRead More door in the morning to say hello to a bear (to my surprise). Usually they run when they see me. 2. Bears are very smart and travel long distances, they know how to find their way back, if you see a bear with multiple tags you know that he has been captured more than once. The problem is that most people think the solution is to kill them, which is not a good one.

The bears frequent my home often. I have captured them on my trampoline, in my drive way, on my playRead More structure, they are definately too close for comfort! We have called DEP several times and they say we just have to learn to live with them. We have done everything to keep them away, put our trash in our shed and they physically broke the door to get in. So we had to move the trash to our garage! Then talking to our neighbors, they had said they had come home, case full of groceries, and the bears got to them while she was in the house inloading. This is not my take "on just living with the bears" my hope is someone takes notice and removes the bears and puts them in a safer place before someone or they get hurt! I am very concerned on this matter! They are at my house every 3-4 weeks maybe sooner.
