Farmington center's volunteer fire department, located next to Miss Porter's School, was founded in 1808 and hasMore grown to protect the surrounding neighborhoods during fire and medical emergencies.

Farmington Volunteer Fire Department is home to the only ladder company in Farmington and its Certified Emergency Medical Technicians are the town's first responders. Department members are also trained in vehicle extrication and water rescue.

The department is currently looking for volunteers interested in serving the town.

In addition to the rows of trophies the department has won, the fire house also hides a bowling alley in the basement.

Tunxis Community College

For many students, that translates into a direct path to a career or guaranteed admission to UConn or one of Connecticut's state universities.

An addition completed in 2008 added a 20,000-square-foot library with a hanging-art installation, computer terminals, a study space overlooking the campus and hundreds of books and periodicals. The campus also houses a NAEYC-accredited day care, where parents may enroll their children and early-childhood students may do observations.

The college's dental hygiene program, the only one in the state, is taught in on-campus dental labs and is part of the answer to Tunxis' question: How can we prepare graduates to meet the need of local employers? To this end Tunxis also offers 11 programs leading to medical careers.
