The FVSO was formed in 1981 as an orchestra for musicians committed to their craft, yet are in the posture of retirement or employment in a non-musical career venue.  The orchestra launched with the advent of Music Director, John Eells joining the teaching staff of Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT.

All of the players are volunteers and come from a wide assortment of backgrounds and occupations, mostly from Greater Hartford and the Farmington River Valley.  The orchestra has grown from 30 members at its inception to over 90 players currently.

The FVSO is recognized as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization by the IRS and is governed by a Board of Directors;  the Board includes members from the community, as well as players from the orchestra.  Other than the Music Director, no member of the FVSO organization receives compensation.

Major supporting agencies for the FVSO include the Greater Hartford Arts Council (GHAC) and the CT Commission on the Arts, Tourism, Culture and History.
