Town Seeking Artist to Repair Defaced Mural

Murals painted on walking trails tunnel were recently tagged with spray paint.

The Town of Farmington is looking for some artistic help repairing the murals on the walking trail after they were defaced with graffiti recently.

The murals, painted by Farmington High School students in 2008 cover a tunnel that arches over the walking trail on Farmington Avenue toward the Burlington line. One of the teachers involved in the project has moved, the students have graduated and the Farmington High School art department is too busy to take on the project, according to Scott Zenke, director of the town’s highway department.

So Zenke is looking for someone who can fix the murals.

“It’s been tagged with spray paint on both sides of the tunnel and we need somebody who can provide some artistry to match back in or cover over what has been tagged,” Zenke said Thursday.

The graffiti is a tagger’s signature, painted in black spray paint, both as you enter the tunnel from the parking lot and from the side by River Road. The side by River Road has been tagged twice, with blue paint on top of the black.

Zenke said preventing graffiti was the motivation behind the mural in the first place.

“What was explained to us was that people don’t tag over other people’s art,” he said.

Anyone interested in taking on the project is asked to contact Scott Zenke at zenkes@farmington-ct.org or at 860-675-2551.
